| Finding the right name for your website should
be easy; but is it? Studies have shown that the length of your domain
name and the extension are often key factors in determining whether
your future site will ever get traffic. At Brampton Media, we can
help you find just the right name and make sure that it is available
for you to register. Here are a few helpful suggestions:
1.
Business Name = Web Domain Name
Whenever possible, try to keep your domain name
consistent with your business name. Brampton Media Corp's web site
can be found at BramptonMedia.com. Microsoft Corporation's website
can be found at Microsoft.com. However, your name may no longer
be available. If this is the case, we can suggest effective alternatives.
2. Keep it Short
Nothing is worse that a Domain that no one can remember.
While 15-20 letter domains are not unusual, try to keep it as short
as possible. For example, Don Valentino Ristorante in Brampton was
looking to register their domain. While www.donvalentinoristorante.com
was available, we suggested removing the "ristorante"
portion and settled on a much shorter and easy to remember name
www.donvalentino.ca
3. Order of Preference
You have likely seen a wide variety of domain extensions.
These are the 2, 3 or 4 letters after the name; .ca, .com, .net,
.biz, .tv, .info, etc. Unfortunately, not all domain extensions are equal. Whenever
possible, consider domain extensions in the following order.
.com - always the first choice as it is
the most recognizeable and universal extension
.ca - great alternative for companies operating in Canada
.net - good for networking and web based businesses
.org - especially for community organizations and non-profits
.biz - usually reserved for business use - but has not caught on
.tv - great if you are running only tv or streaming, otherwise avoid this one
